Chase Headley Image from ESPN |
There are basically two realistic options the Yankees can explore with Chase Headley. They can either trade him or have him be a full time bench player. I wouldn't recommend paying him $26 million just to be a bench player the next two years. Not only that, but he plays too good of defense to just sit on the bench.
Headley can still play defense, as he saved the team seven runs and had good range. He ranked as a top ten defensive third baseman in both runs saved and range. As much as Headley has struggled with the bat posting an OPS+ barely over 90 the past two seasons, the Yankees can still mention Headley's superior fielding in trade talks.
Despite mentioning how trading Chase Headley to make room for Solarte would be the best option for the Yankees, the most realistic type of player the Yanks could get for him would likely be another player with a hefty contract.
Chase Headley being on the trade market wouldn't make Brian Cashman's phone crash from other teams calling, but there are a few teams that could be good trade partners.
One team that comes to mind is the New York Mets, who are in need of a full time Third Baseman since the ailing back of David Wright will likely prevent him from being a starter ever again (sad as that is). Not only that, but I have mentioned in the past that the Mets received horrible defense from their infield the past few seasons.
If a trade with the Mets happened, I could see a trade of Headley for Jay Bruce (who is also owed $13 million, and will be a free agent after the season). However, the obstacle that stands in the way of this trade is that the Mets had to trade one of their top prospects in Dilson Herrera to get Bruce, and may be looking for a better return than Headley. Plus, after the team has stated Bruce will remain on the team, the Mets don't seem to be the best fit.
Here's another team I think would make sense, the Atlanta Braves. Now, I know they had a bad year finishing in the basement of the National League East. However, they finished with a 37-35 second half record (including a hot September in which they had a seven game win streak).
It would certainly be conceivable that Atlanta may be a team to look out for this coming season, and perhaps trading for a serviceable third baseman without tapping into their farm system could be the best course of action. Not only that, but the Braves have also seen bottom ten defensive production from Third Base since 2014. Adonis Garcia wasn't all too great last season, posting a wins above replacement (fangraphs version) of 0.9.
Meanwhile, Headley posted a 2.6. Even with Garcia being far cheaper, the Yankees can always offer to eat a little bit of money on Headley's deal so they can make room for Solarte. I truly believe Solarte would be a great fit for the Yankees, and as much as trading Chase Headley to make room for him may be a challenge, I believe Brian Cashman and Yankees management can get it done.
